Peritoneum is a serous membrane that lines the internal wall of the abdominal cavity and covers intraperitoneal viscera. It consists of parietal layer, visceral layer, Mesenteries, Omenta, and ligaments. Mesenteries, omenta, and ligaments are double or quadriple (omenta) layers of visceral peritoneum that connect the body wall to viscera or connect viscera to viscera and/or convey blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves. There is a peritoneal cavity between the parietal and visceral layers, containing a small amount of peritoneal fluid that lubricates adjacent surfaces of the visceral and parietal layers. Intra- and extra-peritoneal organs are covered by visceral peritoneum. Each intraperitoneal organ invaginates into the visceral peritoneum during development.
