Samarcande, située en Ouzbékistan, est l'une des plus anciennes villes d'Asie centrale, fondée autour de 700 av. J.-C. Conquise par Alexandre le Grand, elle devint un centre important de la Route de la Soie. Elle retrouva son éclat sous Tamerlan au XIVe siècle
