The history of England dates back to prehistoric times, with the earliest human settlements around 800,000 years ago. It became part of the Roman Empire from 43 to 410 AD. The Anglo-Saxons arrived in the 5th century, and by 1066, the Battle of Hastings saw William the Conqueror establish Norman rule
