INTRODUCTION
In doing research for my course, I discovered Harry Sinclair Lewis' (1885–1951) 1925 novel Arrowsmith, winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Arrowsmith, one of the most popular medical books of the 20th century, has frequently been praised as a source of respect and motivation for both medical professionals and academic scholars. While this explanation for the book's continued influence is probably accurate, I hope to argue in this course project that Arrowsmith's strength actually lies in those passages that shift away from the idea of "the Scientist" as a morally superior person and instead emphasize the challenging conflict between scientific ideals and social existence.
One of the most significant works of medical fiction from the 20th century is certainly Harry Sinclair Lewis' 1925 novel Arrowsmith. The 450-page book famously details the hardships of Martin Arrowsmith, a young doctor who was born in the late 1800s and who later came to strongly believe in the value of bacteriology and epidemiology for the advancement of medicine and health. It is evident from the opening page that Martin is destined to become a "great scientific researcher," more intrigued by the unsolved problems of immunology and physical chemistry than by the concerns of any one patient. However, the young physician must first free himself from the seductive influences and temptations of early 20th-century American social life in order to reach his full potential. Martin deviates from his course for roughly 445 pages before he can dedicate himself solely to the search for scientific facts due to deep-seated fears as well as the allure of fame, social status, and financial stability.
The aim of my course paper is to analyze social aspects of academic life in S.Lewis’ novel “Arrowsmith”.
To reach the aim I put forward the following tasks:
